All I Want For Christmas Is A SHE SHED!

For Christmas, all I want is a She Shed! I've been dreaming of one for so many years, and this is my time. Now all I have to figure out is where I want it to be, what shape I want it to take, and what I want to do inside. Then all I have to do is go to Lakewood 400 Antiques Market and search for all the wonderful things that squeal out to me 'take me home to my She Shed.'

Actually, she sheds have been around since the Victorian era. The ladies would escape to lavishly adorned summer houses in the garden. But the modern popularity of She Sheds really came into being when, in 2019, State Farm aired the TV commercial in which the words were spoken, “Well, it finally happened, Zachary, somebody burned down my she shed."

WHAT CAN I DO IN MY SHE SHED?

That's a very personal question. What do you love to do? Sometimes we all just need to run away to a quiet place and be alone. But some of us have a need to be in a tranquil place for creativity to flourish. Here are a few of the most common She Sheds activities:

  • Home Office / Writing Space

  • Art or Craft Studio

  • Reading Nook

  • Hangout Space with Friends

  • Home Gym or Yoga Studio

  • Guest Space

  • Garden Room

Once you've made the decision to create a She Shed, the initial consideration should be determining its purpose. While it's understood that it will serve as a peaceful retreat, it's important to identify how you intend to utilize the space. Once this is clear, you can proceed with the design process.

WHAT STRUCTURE CAN MY SHE SHED TAKE?

If you are fortunate enough to own an old storage shed or playhouse, you are already halfway there. The most popular she sheds are typically those available at Home Depot or Lowe's, which can be either built or relocated to your desired location. Reflect on whether you wish for it to serve as a guest room... Would you like to include a sleeping loft for grandkids to rest? How many windows are ideal for you? Are you interested in a unique door, a front porch, or a garden area in front? What lighting options are you considering? Visualize your ideal she shed with your eyes closed... then picture yourself inside the shed. What activities are you engaging in? Are you in need of storage space, comfortable seating, or tables?

Is your she shed located near your house, next to a leisure area like a pool, or nestled in the woods? Additionally, you should think about the necessity of having access to electricity and water. Rest assured, there are solutions available to ensure your comfort and productivity in your cozy retreat.

WHAT ABOUT INSIDE MY SHE SHED?

The possibilities are as endless as your imagination. Bright white walls, soft muted, or bright colors? Wooden, carpet, vinyl, or painted floors? Shelving, storage, worktables, cocktail tables, comfy sofa, or a daybed for sleeping. Artwork, collective treasures, baskets, books, trays... there is no end. Get your wish list ready! This is your special place.
